TALK ON MODESTY WITH NOOR EL NISA

Laila from Noorelnisa.nl was kind enough to answer a few questions on modest fashion blogging and her personal take on it. We hope you find great inspiration and insight reading this quick talk. Also, make sure to go visit Noorelnisa.nl for beauty tips and modest style ideas!

1. Give us your own definition of Modesty?

"What’s my definition of modesty, you ask? Hmm, I would say being sincere to yourself and having self-respect. You can see this as an Islamic matter or a personal matter. I don’t like judging a book by its cover because the story behind it can be so surprisingly different than what you see in the first place. It’s hard not to judge, I catch myself doing it unconsciously at times. We all judge, but truly, while judging others by their flaws, we’re only pointing out ours. Let’s keep in mind that every time we point one finger, there are three fingers pointing back at us."

2. How do you make Fashion and Modesty work on a daily basis ?

"Being modest means wearing clothes that hide the curves of your body. This can be difficult at times. Especially for a hijabi like me, who lives in Europe. I’m not perfect, I do not dress myself correctly (as in skinny jeans for example), but I’m working on it. Tips on how to look modest is pff..certainly possible. But it’s a woman’s choice depending on what she wants to wear that is modest for HER and keeps the parts of the body covered that needs to be covered.  One likes to wear an abaya, others like to combine maxi skirts with denim blouses. Both are fine. There are also women who combine their short dresses (as in far over the bum) with jeans or trousers that have wide legs or my personal favorite: Boot cut. This is what I’m planning to wear as a replacement to skinny jeans; they’re not tight at the bottom nor are they too wide.  I do get frustrated in the stores whenever I go shopping and all I can see are ‘haram’ clothes, but the trick is to be creative, combine that cute (too) short blouse, dress or cropped sweater with a long maxi skirt."

3. Tell us a bit more about your personal fashion style...

"I would say my style is feminine and classy.  I like to experiment, but only as long as I am comfortable with it. I do not chase trends because everyone is wearing it or because it’s an item everyone has; I only wear what I like. I’m a girly girl so I love to pamper myself with beautiful things and dress myself up in gorgeous clothing items. As any other woman I get inspired by the environment, my social media feed and myself. I try to add a personal touch to an outfit whenever I can; this can be the smallest detail and in my opinion; that is what makes a person unique."

4. You are the administrator of Noor el nisa, what are your goals for the future? Your aspirations?

 "I blog because I care"

"Noorelnisa.nl is a beauty, fashion, lifestyle and cuisineblog filled with articles written from my perspective in life. My ambition is to be a different (beauty) blogger than the rest out there. I want my blog to be recognized in terms of quality and quantity. I don’t blog for the fame, the urge to reach a certain amount of followers on social media or just to set up a name without a specific meaning; I blog because I care.
I started blogging on my Facebook page Hijaab Infinity (that no longer exists because I switched over to Noor el Nisa). When I posted my first OOTD on it, I noticed how many women started liking my page and how much I enjoyed sharing my outfits, beauty tips, tricks, recipes and more with them. Although most of the tips came straight from the Internet; Hijaab Infinity became a fact in the Netherlands and Belgium.  Some readers e-mailed me to ask me why I didn’t have a website/blog, and that is how it all began. On 1 December 2012 my blog Noorelnisa.nl was officially a website and from then and there my life on the Internet and social media began to change. I bought a professional camera, started to post articles that I made and photographed myself; I loved everything from the start and I still do!"

"I honestly never thought that blogging was going to be one of the most important things in my life the way it is right now. I go to bed and wake up with my blog in my head. I’m seriously obsessed with it (lol). I do have a busy life with school and work, so I don’t have a lot of time to blog unfortunately. But I do think about it 24/7 and also about the things I want to blog about, what I think my lovely readers would like… etc…

I was once a true Facebooker, but since I own an iPhone: I’m a hardcore instagramer. I love to stay in touch with my girls on social media, so I’m also on twitter and of course, Facebook, the ‘old’ one too.  I do have a Youtube channel with some tutorials on it, but I’m not very much into making videos. Although I am definitely interested in filming some videos in the future, so you haven’t seen enough of me yet!"

Tips and Tricks from Laila

Tip for my fellow shorties: Some dresses are too long for me, while they’re short to a person a few inches taller. They end just under my kneecaps; this only makes me look even shorter. Tip: check if that dress or blouse or whatever it is, can be shorten to your ideal length. What I’m trying to say is that there are SO many ways to be creative and remember; being modest isn’t boring; it’s elegant and chic!
Lovely things about Laila from Noorelnisa.nl
1. “My Islamic dream destination is Mekka; typical of a muslimah to say this haha. I pretty much would love to go anywhere and just travel. Just for the fun of it!”
2. She loves…Oh my Coco! The Chanel 2.55 as a dream purse!
3. “My dream is to become a successful Moroccan (beauty) blogger that has her own business on the side that sells unique, modest ‘things’. I have SO many ideas of what ‘things’ can turn into, elhamdoullilah! When this dream comes to reality in life, in sha Allaah, then I would love to share this dream with my husband and kid(s).”
