RECAP OF THE HIJAB HILLS EVENT IN ROTTERDAM
Last
sunday I attended an event in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) organised
by Hijaberscommunity.nl and Ruba of HijabHills.
The
topic of the event was modesty, entitled 'Hijab is my choice'. As a
blogger and co-owner of The Bloggers Talk, I just had to be there and
share the experience with you! We were welcomed by Ruba and the
HijaberscommunityNL. First, We started the event with a du'aa,
masha'Allah.
After
the du'aa, The HijaberscommunityNL introduced themselves. The
HijaberscommunityNL was born because they wanted to connect muslim
women in The Netherlands, hoping they will inspire and motivate one
another as sisters. The Hijaberscommunity was first started by the
famous Indonesian fashion designer Dian Pelangi in Indonesia and the
idea has now spread all over the world. Many muslimahs around the
world gather to create little communities so they can have that
connection that will bring them together.
After
the du'a, Khadra Dahir presented us her spoken word about 'Hijab is
my choice. Her spoken word was about hijab and the struggle that
comes with it, she also took the time to emphasize the beauty of
covering up.

After
the beautiful spoken word of Khadra, three inspirational
speakers; Alia Azzouzi, Hafsa Mahraoui and Hülya bozok each told
their own story.
Alia
is a 33 year woman who ownes the cutest espressobar in Rotterdam,
called Espressodates. She
was my favorite speaker, she told us about how hijab was seen in
society and how it could be a positive thing and have positive effect
instead if being a problem. "A
muslim girl wearing the hijab, comes with a package. She comes
with correct values and good behaviour. Things that employers
look for in employees."
But
we tend to make an assumption. We tend to think that employers don't
want us because of our hijab. She reminded us that in order to get
what we want we need positive thinking and to be the best we can,
we shouldn't automatically put the blame of failing onto the
hijab.
Hülya
Bozok. A 28 years old teacher, who tries to be valuable to this
community by helping people. A teacher wearing hijab is something you
see rarely! Women like her motivate girls like me to follow my goals
and dreams. Nothing can stand in our way!
Once
we were finished listening to the speakers, we had a lecture
given by Melek Feer about hijab. Many people do not know whether the
hijab is compulsory or not, she showed us verses from the Quran and
hadiths about why the hijab is required as a form of modesty. We
then took part in a very instructive Islam Quiz. The winner was given
a package of Ruba's favorites as a present!
After the du'a, Khadra Dahir presented us her spoken word about 'Hijab is my choice. Her spoken word was about hijab and the struggle that comes with it, she also took the time to emphasize the beauty of covering up.
When
the break was over, we had a hijab workshop. Ruba and some other
girls like blogger Asma Bint Zorah showed us how they did their
hijab. It was nice to see how each person has created her own style.
Unfortunately
I left after the Hijab Workshop but I know that everyone shared their
hijab story!
What
is yours? Do share it with us. It was great seeing Ruba and
meeting other amazing people. We could safely say it was one
successful event !
